St. Clement’s continually moves forward, serving its community by discussing, exploring, promoting and carrying out works in social justice, education, advocacy, philanthropy and joyful service.

Our faith in action manifests itself in a strong Loaves and Fishes program. These volunteers, supported in conjunction with the United Way, provide food, cook dinner and help with the cleanup in a warm and welcoming atmosphere at Faith Lutheran Church on the corner of Charles Avenue and Mackubin Street in St. Paul. This is done every third Friday of the odd-numbered months. Anyone 13 years old and older is welcome to help. The sign-up sheet is posted in the Parish Hall the month preceding each dinner served.

St. Clement’s is also committed to the St. Paul Area Council of Churches (SPACC). We have been a member congregation for years, supporting SPACC financially as well as with direct service support by providing a volunteer staff to help with the Project Home program. This service provides overflow housing for the homeless at area churches. St. Clement’s has helped staff evening and overnight shelters in a number of facilities throughout St. Paul. Adults and youth of any age are welcome to be hosts at this quarterly event. Volunteer spots go quickly, so look for the sign-up sheet on the Parish Hall wall.

St. Clement’s is a founding member of Faith Builders, an interfaith coalition of St. Paul churches that formed to participate in the Habitat for Humanity Summer Workcamp program. Our group formed out of a desire by the member congregations to put their faith into action to provide a tangible means of meeting the need for affordable housing in St. Paul. We have organized more than 500 volunteers to renovate three homes our last two seasons.

We are not only proud of helping to build affordable homes but of building a vital Christian community as well. Social justice and advocacy issues are very important to us. Besides being members of the Joint Religious Legislative Coalition of Minnesota (JRLC) and delegate members of SPACC, we are also currently raising social justice issues surrounding poverty, hunger and the environment through our efforts in using only Peace Coffee during community hour after the Sunday service. By this small gesture of using this type of fair-trade coffee, we help put more money in the hands of the indigent growers, as well as promote a purely organic product that uses only sustainable agricultural methods and is great tasting. Bags of Peace Coffee are sold monthly to our parishioners. Proceeds from the sales are distributed to our charity organizations.

St. Clement’s has a number of monthly and annual donation events. We have scheduled collections of food and money to stock local foodshelves the first Sunday of every month, the annual Souper Bowl Sunday collection in late January and the Minnesota Foodshare Campaign in March. Other collections have included gathering items such as donated clothing for interviews in May, winter clothing in the fall and a Christmas gift tree in December for Mission for Children. We also collect children's books for Episcopal Community Services. Philanthropy is another way in which Social Action at St. Clement’s touch our community. We are financial contributors to the Episcopal Community Services (ECS), St. Paul Area Council of Churches, Habitat for Humanity, Episcopal Church Home (ECH)

The Social Action Committee meets the second Sunday of each month during coffee hour. We decide which agencies or projects should be supported with the parish budget, discuss ongoing projects and efforts, decide how to respond to special requests and needs and how to best to be of service. We welcome all in the community to be part of this conversation. For information on how to get involved with the St. Clements Social Action Committee call the church office at 651-228-1164 and request to be contacted. One of our members will call you by phone.
